Lowboy trailers have a low loading deck that can help move tall or heavy equipment. RGN stands for removable gooseneck, a configuration that can allow equipment to load from the front when the neck is detached. The terms overlap, but they do not describe one standard trailer with one capacity.

Before booking, confirm the actual deck, loading method, weight capability, and route plan for your machine.

Begin with transport dimensions

Measure the machine in the configuration in which it will travel. Booms, buckets, attachments, exhausts, cab components, and transport stands may affect the overall envelope. Identify which parts can be removed and who will remove and reinstall them.

A manufacturer’s model specification is a useful starting point, but added attachments and modifications can change the move. Send current photos and measured dimensions whenever possible.

Running condition affects the loading plan

An operational machine may be able to drive onto suitable equipment under an agreed procedure. A non-running machine may need a winch, crane, or rigging crew. Steering, braking, hydraulic function, and ground clearance all matter.

Do not assume that an RGN booking includes recovery equipment or that the driver will operate the machine. Assign the loading and unloading responsibilities before dispatch.

Usable deck space is critical

A trailer’s overall length is not its usable well length. The machine’s wheelbase or track length must work with the proposed deck arrangement, and weight must be distributed appropriately.

For example, a machine may fit within the overall dimensions of a trailer but have support points that do not align with usable deck space. That is a load-planning issue that photos, measurements, and carrier review can uncover before pickup.

Include the site in the plan

Provide photos or a description of the entrance, loading area, surface, turning space, and overhead obstructions. The carrier may need room to detach the neck and position equipment. Soft ground or a restricted approach can make an otherwise suitable trailer impractical at the site.

At destination, confirm that a responsible person and the required unloading resources will be available.

Review the quote scope

Ask what the price includes for transportation, permits if needed, escorts if needed, handling, and waiting time. Any route or permit requirement depends on the complete loaded combination and the jurisdictions involved.

Securement must suit the particular equipment. FMCSA’s cargo securement guidance includes requirements for heavy vehicles and machinery; the carrier should determine the compliant arrangement for the move.
