Cut Flower Freight Shipping: Coordinating a Perishable Delivery Window

Cut flowers are highly time-sensitive commercial cargo, but no single trucking specification fits every flower variety, packaging method or grower’s conditioning process. Wholesalers moving sleeves, cartons or floral racks should align transport with harvest, packing and buyer availability rather than quote only mileage.

Specify the crop mix and packaging

Ask the grower for the flower varieties, cartons or rack configuration, loaded unit dimensions and weight. Clarify whether products travel dry-packed or in approved hydration packaging, and whether cartons have ventilation or orientation requirements. The grower must define acceptable temperatures and humidity exposure for the particular varieties.

Mixed loads may contain varieties with conflicting transport conditions; confirm compatibility before promising one setting for all cargo.

Reduce the time outside controlled conditions

Obtain the actual ready time when flowers will be conditioned and available for pickup. Coordinate a truck whose equipment can meet the shipper’s specified environment and whose arrival aligns with packing. Staging sensitive cartons outside while waiting for dispatch can erase the benefit of an efficient route.

Record transit priorities and whether the load can tolerate any stops or transfers. A dedicated truck may be preferable when handling and a short delivery window are essential, but confirm the economics for the specific shipment.

Prepare florist or wholesaler receiving

Document which dock or receiving entrance is staffed, the latest arrival time and whether racks must return to the grower. Have the receiver check counts, visible condition and relevant temperature records promptly. Inform the broker if the destination is a market with restricted access hours.

For recurring shipments ahead of major floral holidays, capacity and delivery slots should be arranged early; last-minute truck availability is never guaranteed.
