Nursery freight includes living cargo whose handling needs can vary by species, packaging, and travel conditions. A truckload of potted plants has different planning needs from boxed dormant stock or large root-ball trees. Let the grower define the product requirements before equipment is selected.
Describe the actual shipping units
List plant types, quantities, pot or root-ball sizes, packaging, and loaded dimensions. Include foliage extending beyond a cart or pallet and the total weight of containers, media, and racks.
Identify whether plants travel on rolling racks, pallets, shelves, or another approved arrangement. Ask who provides those assets and whether they must be returned or exchanged.
Obtain written care instructions
Have the grower establish acceptable transport conditions, handling restrictions, and the receiving window. Specify any temperature, airflow, orientation, or watering preparation requirements that apply to the shipment.
Do not choose a universal temperature for all plants. Mixed species or packaging may require a compatibility review by the grower before they share a vehicle.
Confirm movement requirements before release
Have the nursery’s responsible staff check federal and destination-state plant-health requirements for the species, origin, and route. Certain plants and regulated areas have specific movement conditions; citrus nursery stock is one documented example.
Identify the required certificates, inspections, or other documents with the appropriate authorities. A freight booking does not establish that the plants are eligible to move.
Match unloading to plant handling
Confirm staff, equipment, access, and a suitable receiving area. Explain whether the receiver can unload racks directly or requires plants to be handled individually.
Send the quote request with prepared cargo details, grower instructions, documentation status, and delivery deadline. Allow time for inspection and release before the truck is sent to collect the order.
