Paper Roll Shipping: Confirm Roll Orientation and Handling Equipment

Paper rolls can be heavy, vulnerable to moisture, and sensitive to damage at the edges or outer layers. Their dimensions and orientation affect both handling and loading. A useful quote starts with the rolls themselves and the mill or converter’s instructions.

Create an individual roll list

Provide roll count, diameter, width, individual weight, and packaging. Identify whether rolls are palletized or shipped individually and the required orientation.

Use clear descriptions and drawings where helpful. Ask the shipper and carrier to confirm that they mean the same thing by orientation terms before the trailer is planned.

Confirm handling capability at both facilities

Identify the equipment used to load and unload, including whether suitable roll-handling attachments are available. Share the product owner’s handling limits with the responsible operators.

Do not assume a facility with a forklift can handle every roll configuration. The receiver must be able to manage the actual roll weight, dimensions, and orientation without relying on an improvised method.

Have the carrier review the loading plan

FMCSA publishes specific cargo securement provisions for paper rolls, with applicability depending on the shipment. The carrier should determine the appropriate securement approach for the actual configuration.

Provide support, contact, and protection instructions from the shipper. A general shipping checklist cannot establish the needed blocking or restraint arrangement for an individual load.

Protect condition and traceability

Clarify requirements concerning moisture, cleanliness, odors, and contact with other freight. Record roll identifiers and visible condition before loading and at receipt.

Send the quote request with the roll list, orientation, handling equipment, route, and delivery window. If the mill changes roll sizes or substitutes a different packaging configuration, update the transport review before pickup.
