A cable reel’s diameter, flange width, and gross weight can be more useful for transportation planning than the length of cable it holds. Reels also need a handling method that protects both the cable and the reel. Confirm those details before choosing a truck.
Identify every reel
Provide the outside diameter, overall width, gross weight, reel material, and quantity. Include flanges and protruding parts in the measurements. Identify reels that differ in size or construction instead of quoting the entire order as identical units.
Ask the cable supplier for handling and transportation instructions for the actual product and reel. Instructions for a reusable steel reel should not automatically be applied to a different wooden reel.
Protect the cable as well as the structure
Tell the carrier which parts may be contacted by handling equipment or restraints. Southwire’s handling guidance, for example, cautions against equipment contacting the cable or reel wrap directly.
Have qualified personnel establish suitable support, restraint, and lifting arrangements. A reel that can rotate or roll needs a load-specific plan; packaging alone should not be assumed to prevent movement on the trailer.
Verify the receiver’s capability
Identify how the destination will lift or unload the reel and whether its equipment is suitable for the complete unit. Provide site access, ground conditions, and the intended unloading location.
If the reel is going directly to a cable installation, distinguish unloading from mounting it on payout equipment. Those are separate tasks unless the service agreement expressly includes both.
Account for the reel after delivery
Clarify whether the reel stays with the receiver, belongs to a return program, or requires a later collection. Keep any empty-return arrangement separate and documented.
Request the freight quote using the reel list, handling instructions, pickup and delivery locations, and required dates. Update the request if the supplier changes reel sizes during order preparation.
