Steel sheet and plate loads combine dense weight with packaging and handling concerns that can differ by finish and thickness. A total tonnage does not explain how the load will sit on the trailer or be removed. Quote the actual bundles and their support requirements.
Prepare a bundle-level list
Provide length, width, thickness information where relevant, bundle count, and weight per bundle. Include skids, dunnage, and packaging in the outside dimensions and gross weight.
Distinguish loose plates, banded stacks, and finished or coated products. Identify bundles that require special handling instead of assuming every item on the order can be treated alike.
Define surface and edge protection
Ask the shipper for requirements covering moisture, contact, dunnage, and finished surfaces. Tell the carrier about edges or projections that affect the securement arrangement.
The handling and transport teams should establish suitable protection for both the product and the equipment used to restrain it. Shipping bands should not be assumed to replace the vehicle’s cargo securement plan.
Confirm how bundles will be lifted
Describe the crane, forklift, or other approved method at origin and destination. Identify lifting access and whether the receiver can unload the bundles in their planned order.
Have the carrier review concentrated loading, distribution, and usable trailer space using actual bundle weights. A shipment that occupies only part of the deck may still require substantial capacity.
Make changes visible before loading
Update the piece list if the mill substitutes lengths, increases bundle weight, or changes packaging. Confirm that the selected equipment and handling arrangement still fit.
Request a quote with the bundle list, protection instructions, loading methods, lane, and appointment requirements. Clarify who provides support materials and any special handling outside the transportation scope.
