Ceramic Tile Freight Shipping: Protecting Dense, Fragile Pallets

Ceramic and porcelain tile packs substantial weight into relatively little floor space. The same pallet can be too heavy for a light-duty liftgate and too fragile to withstand poor restraint or sudden point loading. Builders, flooring distributors and importers need a plan for both handling capacity and breakage prevention.

What to verify before requesting a truck

Count cartons and calculate the gross weight including the pallet. Measure the full footprint and height, note any overhang, and check corner protection, shrink wrap, bands and pallet integrity. Heavy cartons need support across the full pallet; a broken or undersized pallet can shift the load long before delivery.

If a load contains mixed sizes, finishes or dye lots, label each unit so the receiver can find the correct material without unnecessarily unwrapping other pallets.

Do not equate trailer payload with site unloading capability

A truck may legally carry the freight while the customer’s forklift cannot safely lift an individual pallet. Confirm the maximum unit weight accepted by the destination, dock and forklift access, whether the delivery area is paved and level, and who will move tile inside the building.

A liftgate is not an automatic solution. The carrier must verify both the platform capacity and the distribution of the pallet weight, plus safe roll-off handling.

Give the transporter breakage-sensitive instructions

State whether pallets can be double stacked; do not rely on an assumed stacking permission. Confirm how the load will be restrained, whether it must stay dry, and which party will document condition at loading and receipt. Request photos before dispatch when practical.

If the project can receive only during a narrow installation window, include the exact unloading appointment in the initial quote. A cheaper rate is not useful if the unloading crew is gone when the truck arrives.

Information to include with the freight quote

  • Number and gross weight of each tile pallet
  • Pallet condition, overhang and stackability
  • Receiving forklift and unloading labor
  • Jobsite access and appointment window
  • Photos and product identifiers for damage review
