Carrier’s Cargo Insurance Is Too Low? Find Compliant Freight Coverage

A shipper with a high-value load may have a truck available but still be unable to release the freight because the carrier’s cargo insurance does not meet the customer’s requirements. The correct response is not to assume every published insurance limit works for every commodity. Verify the actual policy terms, applicable exclusions and contractual requirements before selecting replacement capacity.

Do you have an active shipment? Request freight coverage from 2A Logistics with the lane, cargo, pickup cutoff and any carrier acceptance rules.

Identify the real coverage requirement

Request the customer’s written insurance requirements, including required cargo limit, the insured party, any applicable equipment/commodity exclusions and whether a certificate or additional endorsement is needed. Ask which documents your organization’s risk team or insurer must review. A certificate of insurance is evidence of reported coverage, not a substitute for reviewing policy limitations that may apply to the specific shipment.

Clarify the cargo exposure

Document the freight’s declared commercial value, commodity, quantity, packaging, stops, storage expectations and any especially sensitive handling conditions. Some policies limit or exclude certain cargo classes, unattended equipment, subcontracted movements or other specific circumstances. Do not treat a general cargo-limit number as proof that every load is protected to that amount. Ask the relevant licensed insurance professional or risk specialist to determine sufficiency.

Request carriers that can satisfy the documented criteria

Send the lane, shipment date, equipment type, weight and the written insurance conditions to the broker. Ask for an assigned carrier whose relevant documentation can be reviewed before dispatch. If no suitable option is immediately available, discuss whether the customer will authorize a different arrangement, additional appropriate coverage or a revised pickup date. Never move freight under a knowingly unmet requirement without authorized resolution.

Protect the booking and handoff

Retain the policy evidence and the written approval path your customer requires. Verify the authorized carrier identity before releasing the load, especially if a replacement is sourced close to pickup. Separate insurance procurement or coverage advice from transportation booking; neither a freight quote nor an online article binds an insurance contract.

What the freight provider needs

  • Customer’s actual cargo coverage requirement
  • Commodity and declared cargo value
  • Any exclusions, deductibles or location restrictions to review
  • Assigned carrier’s identity and supporting documents
  • Who has authority to approve the insurance review

Frequently asked questions

If a carrier has $100,000 cargo insurance, is my $90,000 load automatically covered?

No. Actual coverage depends on policy terms, exclusions, insured risks and the shipment circumstances; have an appropriate professional review the requirement.

Can I book a different carrier the same day?

Potentially, if suitable capacity and acceptable documentation are available before pickup. Compliance should be verified rather than assumed.
