Steel Coil Shipping: Information the Carrier Needs Before Accepting the Load

Steel coils place substantial weight in a small area and require a load-specific transportation plan. Carrier selection should begin with the individual coils and their required orientation, not just the combined shipment weight. Use a carrier capable of evaluating the applicable commodity-specific securement requirements.

Provide individual coil measurements

Send coil count, individual weights, outside diameters, widths, and packaging details. Identify the required eye orientation using descriptions or drawings the shipper and carrier both understand.

Include the material and any surface-protection requirements. A light group of packaged coils and one very heavy coil can need different equipment even when total load weight is comparable.

Have the carrier review equipment and securement

The carrier needs to evaluate concentrated loading, deck suitability, axle distribution, and the securement arrangement. FMCSA’s cargo securement rules include provisions for metal coils; the applicable method depends on the load.

Do not turn a general blog checklist into instructions for chain quantities or placement. Share accurate cargo information and let qualified personnel establish the compliant plan.

Coordinate the loading facility

Confirm crane or forklift arrangements, available coil handling equipment, loading hours, and site safety requirements. Tell the broker which materials the shipper provides and which equipment the carrier must bring.

Clarify whether the facility will reject a vehicle that does not meet its equipment requirements. Resolve those specifications before dispatch rather than at the scale or loading bay.

Verify delivery capability

The receiving facility must be able to unload the actual coil configuration. Obtain its contact, appointment, handling capability, and any restrictions on arrival or orientation.

Request a quote with the piece list, orientation, both handling plans, route, and protection requirements. Changes to individual coil weight or configuration deserve a fresh review, even if total tonnage stays the same.
