A receiver refuses a load, and the driver needs a decision. Before booking another movement, determine why delivery was rejected and who has authority to choose the next destination. A missed appointment requires a different response from a refusal involving damage, product condition, or an incorrect purchase order.
Document the reason and current situation
Ask for the receiver’s stated reason, arrival time, unloading status, piece count, and photos where appropriate. Establish whether the refusal affects the whole shipment or selected items. Preserve the delivery paperwork and written refusal.
Find out where the loaded vehicle is parked and how long the carrier can remain available. If freight requires refrigeration or other protection, obtain the shipper’s written instructions for the holding period.
Get an authorized destination
The shipper or authorized cargo owner should decide whether to request another appointment, divert the freight, return it, or arrange another disposition. Confirm the exact address and receiving acceptance before sending the driver anywhere.
Do not assume a nearby warehouse can accept the load. Space, product restrictions, hours, and handling capability must be confirmed, especially for food, hazardous materials, or unusually heavy pieces.
Price the change separately
Request the cost and timing for the proposed option. Distinguish added transportation from waiting, unloading, storage, transfer, and return charges. Ask whether the original truck can complete the move or a handoff is required.
Redelivery tomorrow may be practical with secure holding and a confirmed appointment. It may be unsuitable if the equipment cannot stay occupied or the product requires another arrangement.
Close the loop in writing
Confirm who approved the change, new delivery references, appointment, contacts, and required documents. If part of the load is accepted, reconcile what remains onboard before dispatch.
The goal is an executable next step, with custody and condition records that match the freight actually being moved.
