Power-Only Trucking: How to Move a Loaded Trailer You Already Have

Power-only trucking supplies the tractor and driver while you provide the trailer. It can be useful when a loaded trailer is ready to move, a leased trailer needs repositioning, or a trailer pool needs support. The key question is whether the specific trailer can be accepted and moved under an agreed operating plan.

Identify the trailer before requesting a tractor

Send the trailer type, length, unit number, location, and loaded or empty status. Include the cargo description and gross cargo weight if loaded. A dry van, refrigerated trailer, flatbed, and specialized trailer can create different compatibility and operating needs.

Explain who owns or leases the trailer and who authorizes its release. Photos of the trailer and connections help identify questions early, but they do not replace the carrier’s inspection.

Decide what happens at destination

A one-way loaded move can end in several ways: the driver waits for unloading, drops the trailer, returns it empty, or moves it to another location. Those are different assignments. Specify the destination’s acceptance hours and whether it has a place to park the trailer.

For example, moving a shipper-owned van to a distribution center and leaving it there is different from returning the same trailer that evening. Quote both legs if a return is required.

Clarify condition and responsibility

Identify known tire, brake, light, refrigeration, or structural issues before dispatch. The carrier must determine that the equipment is suitable for the move; a driver’s arrival should not be the first time a defect becomes known.

Confirm the applicable trailer interchange or other coverage arrangements, inspection records, and responsibility for equipment damage with the parties involved. Do not treat ordinary cargo coverage as confirmation that someone else’s trailer is covered.

Request the complete move

Provide pickup and delivery addresses, available times, trailer identification, cargo information, gate contacts, and the final disposition of the trailer. Include any yard rules and requirements for seals or temperature operation.

Ask which waiting, extra movement, and empty-return charges are included. A clear trailer handoff plan makes a power-only quote much easier to compare.
