Pipe can be light and bulky, short and dense, or long enough to complicate trailer selection. A total tonnage does not describe how the bundles occupy a deck or how the receiver will remove them. Quote pipe freight from a bundle-level load plan.
Build a bundle list
List material, diameter, length, bundle count, and weight per bundle. Include couplings, flanges, or packaging that changes the outside dimensions. Distinguish straight pipe from coiled or fabricated assemblies.
State whether bundles may be stacked and who approves the stacking arrangement. Packaging bands keep a bundle together but should not be assumed to complete vehicle securement.
Identify support and protection requirements
Ask the shipper to specify dunnage, support spacing, contact restrictions, and protection for coatings or finished ends. Share the handling instructions with the carrier before equipment is accepted.
Long bundles may need a particular support layout. The carrier should review usable deck length, weight distribution, and any overhang or route implications for the actual load.
Load for the receiver’s equipment
Explain whether a crane, forklift, or side loader handles the bundles at each end. Identify access from one or both sides and any restrictions on lifting several bundles together.
If the receiver needs particular bundles first, establish the unloading sequence before loading. Moving the easiest bundle onto the trailer first can create unnecessary rehandling later.
Define the quote scope
Provide addresses, ready date, appointment, bundle list, loading photos, and protection requirements. Ask whether dunnage, tarping, waiting, and special equipment are included.
If lengths or quantities change, update the load plan. A quote for short bundles should not be carried forward unchanged when longer pipe is added.
