Blind Freight Shipping: Coordinate Documents Without Losing Operational Clarity

Blind shipping is an arrangement intended to limit which supplier or customer details appear in specified customer-facing communications or documents. It requires coordination between the seller, shipper, carrier, and receiver. The carrier still needs accurate operational information to collect and deliver the freight.

Define the requested arrangement

Explain exactly which information should be withheld from which party and why. A seller seeking to protect a supplier relationship may have different requirements from a distributor coordinating a direct delivery.

Ask whether the carrier supports the requested process and what paperwork it requires. Do not assume a “blind” note on a quote automatically changes every document or tracking message.

Keep actual transport details accurate

Provide the real pickup and delivery locations, cargo description, weights, contact details, and any regulated shipment information required for the movement.

Use carrier-approved procedures for document handling. Blind shipping is not permission to misstate cargo, destinations, ownership, or legally required information.

Align documents before pickup

Identify who prepares the bill of lading, packing list, labels, and delivery references. Review which documents accompany the freight and which are supplied separately.

Check physical packaging too. Supplier branding, labels, or enclosed invoices may disclose information even when a bill of lading uses an agreed customer-facing format. Resolve that at the packing stage.

Control the communication chain

Tell the broker who handles appointments, status updates, delivery exceptions, and proof of delivery. Make sure the receiver can recognize and accept the shipment using the approved references.

Request a quote with the normal shipment data plus the specific blind-shipping requirements. Confirm acceptance in writing before dispatch and ask whether document coordination carries a separate charge.
