Precast concrete deliveries work best when the manufacturer, carrier, and installation team agree on which pieces are moving and how they will be handled. A delivery that arrives out of sequence may require extra storage and lifting. Build the transport request from the project’s piece schedule.
Use piece marks and verified weights
List each piece identifier, dimensions, shipping weight, approved orientation, and delivery location. Include projections and any transport frame or support assembly.
Link the shipping list to the site’s drawings so the receiving team can recognize each component. Similar-looking pieces should not rely on visual identification alone.
Obtain the manufacturer’s transport instructions
Ask the manufacturer or responsible engineer to identify support locations, lifting provisions, and restrictions on stacking or contact. Share the documents with the carrier and lifting contractor.
The National Precast Concrete Association emphasizes considering handling throughout production, transportation, and final placement. The shipping plan needs the approved instructions for the actual piece; generic blocking or lifting assumptions are insufficient.
Coordinate the truck sequence
Confirm which components the installer needs first, crane availability, and the number of trucks the site can accept. If trailers must be unloaded from a particular side, communicate that before loading.
Plan what happens if installation slows or access closes. Establish who can redirect a delivery to an approved staging area and who must authorize associated costs.
Define the full delivery assignment
Separate transport from crane work, rigging, traffic management, storage, and final placement. Ask the carrier to review equipment and route suitability for the loaded configuration.
For quoting, provide the piece list, handling drawings, release dates, destination access, and installation sequence. Reconfirm the schedule when production changes a piece’s availability rather than sending another component simply to keep a truck moving.
