Removing pallets can create more usable cargo space, but it also changes how the freight is loaded, counted, and unloaded. A floor-loaded shipment is not simply a palletized shipment with a lower height. Compare the whole operation before deciding how an order should travel.
Describe the units the workers will handle
List carton counts, dimensions, individual weights, packaging strength, and product identification. State any orientation or stacking limits provided by the manufacturer.
Identify whether the shipment contains one uniform carton size or many different items. The receiving team may need time and space to sort mixed products that would otherwise arrive grouped on pallets.
Confirm acceptance at destination
Ask the receiver whether it accepts floor-loaded freight and what labor or equipment it uses to unload. Obtain expected unloading time and any handling charges directly from the responsible party.
A dock appointment does not automatically include unloading loose cartons. If the receiver requires pallets, evaluate palletizing at origin or an explicitly arranged intermediate service before dispatch.
Compare the actual shipping configurations
For each option, calculate the prepared shipment’s volume and weight using approved stacking rules. Account for pallets and packaging in the palletized version, and any unusable space or protective materials in the floor-loaded version.
Do not assume a higher carton count is safe just because the volume calculation fits. The load must remain suitable for the product, vehicle, and handling process.
Price labor and time alongside transportation
Compare loading labor, unloading labor, pallets, handling, waiting, and any transfer service in addition to linehaul. Ask how counts and condition will be recorded at both ends.
For illustration, uniform durable cartons moving between facilities equipped for loose loading may present a different decision from mixed fragile products delivered to a small warehouse. Request both quotes only after defining an executable handling plan for each.
