Switchgear Shipping: Keep Shipping Sections, Handling Instructions, and Storage Aligned

Switchgear may arrive as multiple shipping sections that must be identified and handled correctly for installation. The transport plan needs the manufacturer’s instructions for those sections, not simply the finished system’s overall dimensions. Coordinate delivery with the team responsible for receiving and storage.

Identify the shipping sections

List section numbers, prepared dimensions, weights, and separate accessories. Include crates, skids, lifting structures, and projections in the measurements.

Match each section to the installation documentation so the receiver can identify what has arrived. Confirm which components ship separately and where their inventory is recorded.

Follow the equipment-specific handling instructions

Obtain the manufacturer’s approved lifting, support, orientation, and restraint information. Identify who supplies and operates the lifting equipment at both ends.

Do not infer lifting capacity from visible brackets or assume a cabinet can be laid down. The carrier and handling team need the actual instructions before approving the loading arrangement.

Distinguish transport packaging from storage protection

Ask how the shipment must be protected during transit and after unloading. Manufacturer requirements can differ between those stages. Eaton’s switchgear instructions, for example, warn that shipping packaging is not suitable for storage for the equipment covered by that manual.

If installation is delayed, have the owner establish an approved storage plan instead of leaving packaged equipment wherever the truck unloads it.

Coordinate the site handoff

Confirm the unloading location, handling access, weather exposure, and personnel who will inspect and receive the sections. Arrange final placement or installation separately unless expressly included.

Request a quote with the section list, manufacturer instructions, origin, delivery conditions, and required arrival. Recheck the prepared dimensions if shipping braces or protective packaging change before dispatch.
