A light pallet can still consume valuable trailer capacity when nothing may be placed above it. Non-stackable freight needs to be identified during quoting so the provider can assess space and service suitability. A label added at pickup does not substitute for advance agreement.
Explain why stacking is restricted
Identify whether the limit comes from the product, packaging, irregular shape, exposed components, or the manufacturer’s instructions. Provide the outside dimensions and total packaged weight for each unit.
If some loading above the unit is allowed under specified conditions, obtain those conditions from the responsible packaging or product specialist. Avoid describing freight as fully stackable when the approval is narrower.
Describe the unusable space
Tell the provider whether cargo must have clear space above it, beside it, or around projections. Include overhang and any support structure in the footprint.
A pallet count alone does not communicate these restrictions. Two shipments with the same number of pallets and the same weight can require different amounts of usable vehicle space.
Confirm service acceptance and pricing
Ask how the proposed carrier or service handles the restriction and whether it changes the quote. Pricing methods and additional-charge rules vary, so obtain the terms for the specific movement.
If a shared service cannot meet the requirement, compare another suitable service or an approved packaging change. Do not alter protection simply to fit a cheaper rate assumption.
Make instructions consistent at pickup
Use the agreed markings and include the handling restriction in the shipment documents. Ensure the actual package matches the dimensions and condition used for quoting.
Send photographs where the shape is difficult to describe. Request confirmation of the accepted restriction before dispatch so the dock, broker, and carrier are planning for the same load.
