A recruiting call should help an experienced freight agent evaluate a business relationship. You should leave knowing what has been answered, what still needs clarification, and what the next step involves.
Use the following questions to make that conversation productive.
1. What kinds of freight are a good fit for your operation?
Explain your equipment experience, typical lanes, and customer requirements. Ask where the brokerage sees a fit and whether there are shipment types or service expectations that require additional review.
2. How would my compensation be calculated?
Ask for an example that includes the commission base, applicable deductions, and payment conditions. Request the proposed terms in writing before deciding.
3. Which responsibilities would I handle personally?
Discuss sales, quoting, carrier sourcing, tracking, documentation, and customer communication. Identify the tasks assigned to the agent and those assigned elsewhere.
4. How are new customers and credit requests reviewed?
Ask what information is required, who makes the decision, and how an agent learns the outcome. Discuss what happens when requested volume exceeds an approved limit.
5. What is the process when a shipment develops a problem?
Use an example from your experience without sharing confidential details. Ask whom you would contact, what authority you would have, and how the issue would be documented.
6. What tools would I use, and what would they cost?
Clarify system access, onboarding, and any costs assigned to you. Do not assume a tool or subscription is included simply because it appears in a recruiting discussion.
7. How does the agreement address customer relationships and departure?
Ask where the relevant terms appear in the proposed agreement and get professional advice on anything you do not understand. It is better to resolve an unclear provision before signing than after a disagreement.
8. What information do you need from me to evaluate fit?
A useful discussion works both ways. Be ready to describe your background, the work you manage, and your goals. Share only information you are permitted to disclose; a first call does not require handing over confidential account records.
