If two freight agent opportunities advertise different commission splits, the higher number can look like the obvious choice. Sometimes it may be. But the comparison only works when you understand what each offer includes.
A useful evaluation looks at compensation alongside expenses, workload, and the business you can realistically service under the arrangement.
Compare the same commission base
Suppose one hypothetical offer pays 70% of a $300 commission base. That produces $210. Another pays 80%, but applies it to a $250 base after defined deductions. That produces $200.
These are illustrations, not market benchmarks or 2A Logistics’ terms. They show why a percentage alone cannot establish which offer pays more on the same shipment.
Ask each brokerage to explain its calculation using comparable facts. Include any fees paid separately by the agent so the comparison captures the whole arrangement.
Put a value on your working time
Consider the responsibilities attached to each offer. How much time would you spend on sales, shipment management, paperwork, and billing follow-up? Which tasks do you want to handle yourself?
A structure can be attractive on paper yet poorly matched to your working style. Equally, an experienced agent may prefer to retain substantial responsibility. The point is to understand the workload you are agreeing to.
Examine payment conditions
Ask when commissions become payable and what documentation is required. Discuss how adjustments and unresolved invoices affect payment.
Two arrangements with similar earnings calculations may have different timing. Include that difference in your planning rather than discovering it after your first shipments.
Check whether the brokerage fits your accounts
Compensation matters on business you can actually handle together. Discuss the freight types, customer requirements, credit needs, and operating procedures relevant to your experience.
Avoid assuming that every account you describe will be approved. Use the conversation to understand how the brokerage evaluates opportunities and what information it needs.
